Zuoz

Zuoz (? [ Tsuə̯ts ] / i, dt date: Zutz or the Zuz ) is a municipality in the district of the Upper Engadine, Maloja district of the canton of Graubünden in Switzerland. Zuoz is the center of the historic landscape La Plaiv.

Blazon: Sable, a silver (white ) sword with a golden ( yellow ) handle, crossed with a golden crosier, surmounted by a golden crown.

The coat of arms is based on the old seal of the municipality, which shows Saint Lucius with crown and scepter. Instead the figure were crown and crozier, as a sign of his dual position, selected the attributes of the saints as king and bishop, while the sword pointing to the old court tradition of the place.

Languages

The inhabitants speak mainly turkey ( an idiom of Romansh ) and German ( Graubünden dialect). In addition, Italian and Portuguese, the languages ​​of the immigrants living in Zuoz. Until well into the 19th century, all the inhabitants spoke Romanesque. In 1880 there were still 85 %, 1910 and 1941 56%. 1970 and 1980, the municipality had only a (relative) majority Romansh (1970: 469 1165 population = 40%, 1980: see below). Since the 1980s, German wins more and more ground.

Because thanks to school and community can still 46 % of the population speak Romansh, it's only official language. Unofficially, however, the German has the same status.

Religions and denominations

1554 were the inhabitants of the town converted to the Protestant faith.

Origin and nationality

From the end of 2005, living in Zuoz 1263 residents were 900 ( = 71%) Swiss nationals.

History

Zuoz was formerly capital of the Upper Engadine. 1244 Andreas Planta is mentioned about Zuoz. After 1288, the lower courts were in the Upper Engadine until the beginning of the 16th century in the hands of the Chur Ministerialengeschlechts Planta.

Attractions

  • Zuoz is considered one of the villages with the best-preserved village center and numerous well-preserved buildings from the 16th century and earlier.

Sport and Leisure

Zuoz is now a major tourist resort and lies on the route of the Engadin Ski Marathon. Zuoz has five ski lifts and golf course. Numerous facilities for other sports are offered.

Education

Zuoz is also known for the Lyceum Alpinum Zuoz, a boarding school for 11 to 20 year old boys and girls with a high proportion of foreign students.
