Zupfgeigenhansel was founded by Erich tasting cup and Thomas Friz German folk duo of the 1970s and 1980s.
Name
The group took its name from the famous hiking bird song book The Zupfgeigenhansl, which was published in 1909. The group's repertoire, however, overlaps only partially with the contents of the songbook.
The 1970s
Zupfgeigenhansel initially followed the idea of rediscovering German folk songs with a liberal character, partly to be provided with their own melodies and to make them popular again.
