The Zutendaal Air Base is a military airbase of the Belgian Air Force in Genk, Belgium.

World War II

In 1944, was located on the airfield a 1500 m long grass runway of the United States Air Force. This was October 15, 1944 to July 16, 1945 in operation and was designated the code name Y -29.

On January 1, 1945, the last major air battles of World War II took place on that airport, when the Wehrmacht attacked Allied airfields in France and Belgium during the operation base plate. At the height of the airfield, the units of the German Luftwaffe were locked in combat with formations American P -51 Mustangs and P -47 Thunderbolts. The German Luftwaffe lost about 24 aircraft, while an American plane was destroyed on the ground. 20 pilots were killed here.
