The county of Zutphen

The county in northern Hamaland was established in August 1046 from King Henry III. (1039-1056) to the bishop of Utrecht gave after he had issued the previous owner, Gottfried with the beard, Duke of Lower Lorraine, from the family of Wigeriche of rebellion.

The deed of 1046 suggests that Gottfried or his father and predecessor, Duke Gotzelo I., in the northern Hamaland had established a feudal counts, someone who had been invested with the exercise of the Graf Office by the direct imperial counts. It appears that the state is created shortly after Christmas 1025, as Duke Godfrey's father and predecessor, namely was from September 1024 to Christmas 1025 in opposition to the succession of Emperor Henry II by Conrad II, however, with him Christmas 1025 reconciled again. During this time Conrad had a favorite, Werner, property given in the southern Hamaland and on the Veluwe, is of Adela of Hamaland for their involvement in the murder of Bill Unger Count Wichmann III. had been seized in October 1016. In a document from the period 1046/56 was at in the southern Hamaland a Count Wecelo ( a well-known form of Werner), it can be assumed that that Wecelo / Werner Count of southern Hamalands was. Thus, a count should be in the northern Hamaland also have been used, probably the ancestor of the later Zutphener Graf house, Gottschalk ( † 1063 ).

As Gottschalk had not participated in the rebellion of his Duke Gottfried with the beard, he could remain in office after his defeat. Normally, he would have become rich just count, but since Henry III. 1046 the northern Hamaland gave the Bishop of Utrecht, this did not happen, and Gottschalk remained Lehnsgraf, now the bishop. The result was the 1046 ' county Northern Hamaland ", which soon became known as" county of Zutphen. "

De Rathnon ( at the edge Diepenveen ) ad Hun ( the Schipbeek at Olst ), de Hun ad Weicstapolon ( Weggestapelen between Bathmen and Holten at the Schipbeek ) inde ad Westerfle " (: In a document of 1046 the boundaries of the county are described as follows Westerflier at Diepenheim ), de Westerfle ad Agastaldaburg ( Hazelberg in Lochem ), de Agastaldaburg ad Stenere ( Steenderen ) by silvam, et in alia parte Isle de Louene ( Leuvenheim at hum) usque ad Erbeke ( Eerbeek in hum), de Erbeke ad Suthemp ( Empe at Voorst ), et alia ex parte item Isle ad Ascethe ( Eschde at Gorssel ). The couple's son, Henry I then went on as Count of funds and Zutphen. As money was raised to a duchy in 1339, you spoke of the " Duke of funds and Count of Zutphen ."

Funds and Zutphen came in 1371 to the Counts of Jülich, 1423 to the House of Egmond and 1538 the house of the Mark, which were dukes of Jülich, Cleves and Berg and Count of Mark and Ravensburg mountain, and Lords of Ravenstein simultaneously.
