Zvolen

Zvolen ( Altsohl German, Hungarian Zólyom - older even Ózólyom, Veterosolium Latin ) is a town in central Slovakia. It lies at the mouth of the river Slatina in the Hron / Gran and gives a district its name.

History

The city was first mentioned in 1135 and is one of the oldest prehistoric settlements in Slovakia, because of the strategic location of the city crossed each other since time immemorial major trade routes. From the original watch castle of the city, today known as hrad Pustý (literally " Desert Castle " ) on the opposite bank of the city have been preserved is in ruins.

Under Bela IV Zvolen received city rights in 1243 and 1274 under King Ladislaus IV wide range of privileges.

In the second half of the 14th century ( 1370-1382 ) King Louis I of Hungary was built as a summer residence in this city of Upper Hungary a powerful hunting castle ( Castle Zvolen ). Near the city of the federal state parliament of 1378 was held, on which his daughter Hedwig was married to the Polish King Jagiello.
