AWZ P70 Limousine

The P70 was a small car that was produced by the IFA - VEB automobile factory Zwickau ( AWZ P70 as " Zwickau " ) or VEB Sachsenring Zwickau Automobile (as Sachsenring P70 ). The designation P70 stands for passenger cars with 700 cc displacement. The P70 was after the Chevrolet Corvette is one of the first production vehicles with plastic body. It was designed as an intermediate type on the way to mass motorization in the GDR and thus the precursor of the Trabant. In the years 1955 to 1959, 36 151 vehicles in the designs sedan, coupe (about 1500 pieces) and combination produces. The car was also exported in all its versions.

Features

The P70 is similar in basic design to the F8, where he outwardly differs significantly by the new pontoon body of the latter. He came with a frame, a planked wood thermoset moldings body and a slightly modified F8 engine. This engine was installed as opposed to the IFA F8 rotated 180 degrees so that the cooling in the vertically offset rear of the engine lay. The performance of the two-cylinder two-stroke gasoline engine was increased by aluminum cylinder heads with centrally located spark plug to 2.5 hp to 22 hp. The power transfer was similar to the F8 via a multi- disc wet clutch and a unsynchronized three- speed gearbox with a lockable free wheel on the front axle. The car also had a Dynastart system, ie a seated directly on the motor shaft 12 V alternator, which also functioned as a starter.

The body was a novelty: It consisted of a wooden frame, which was planked ( in sedan and station wagon ) with novel, at great expense specially developed Duroplastschalen. With this construction could be dispensed with steel plate which was in short supply in the GDR. Also, the vehicle weight could be reduced by the plastic and achieve a great longevity. Furthermore, it should be replaced with the P70 of the obsolete body of F8 while the seating and space to be improved. Due to the excessive price levels and not yet mature design and manufacture of the P70 was not considered suitable for mass motorization. Rather flowed the experience acquired in the parallel development of the Trabant.

The P70 was originally equipped spartan, which caused resentment and faltering sales. He initially had no moving door windows still a trunk lid. In 1956 the vehicle in the driver's and front passenger's door sliding window and some other improvements. The trunk was available for the sedan only through the passenger compartment, only when the last copies produced, there was a trunk lid.

Models

In addition to the sedan came in the spring of 1956, the P70 Kombi on the market. The roof of the equal -to- B pillar of the sedan station wagon was covered with artificial leather. The large rear door was hinged at the side ( left). It allowed good access to the large trunk. The size of the trunk made the P70 Kombi very popular. The P70 Coupé ( from spring 1957) showed with a steel body in extremely sporty design, which attracted attention abroad. In addition to the streamlined form also contributed to the aggressive radiator mouth, the chrome-trimmed air scoop on the hood and the center bar including retractable crank windows. Was allowed, however, to the motor, so you had to find that the sportsmanship was rather superficial. The coupe had in fact despite its slightly higher self-weight the same engine as the other models.
