Zwickau Model

As Zwickau model, a pilot project for linking tram and train is called, in which, after approved Railway Construction and Operation (EBO ) and can move only slightly adapted to the particularities of tram rail vehicles on tram tracks. The only route is not yet a connection in the Saxon town of Zwickau eponymous where vehicles Vogtlandbahn operate on a three-rail tram Zwickau.

History

The distance from Zwickau Hauptbahnhof to the center of Zwickau was opened on 28 May 1999. Between Zwickau Hauptbahnhof and Zwickau city hall, the route of the disused Reinsdorfer industrial railway is used, the remaining portion to the city center was completely rebuilt, so the standard gauge Vogtlandbahn can drive a three-rail together with the meter-gauge Zwickau tram between Zwickau city hall and Zwickau center.

Unlike conventional Tram -Trains the Karlsruhe model was the route designed in Zwickau that slightly adapted mainline vehicles can be used. The Vogtlandbahn uses RegioSprinter that have been converted specifically for the requirements of the tram construction and operating order. They were equipped for example with direction indicators, bells and transponders for the switch operation. When the tram types Tatra KT4D and GT6M run.
