Zwijndrecht is a municipality in Belgium, Antwerp Province. It includes the villages Zwijndrecht and Burcht. The municipal coat of arms is derived from the family coat of arms of an Italian nobleman who Zwijndrecht 1667, in possession.

Location and economic

Zwijndrecht, and notably the district of Burcht, located on the west bank of the Scheldt River opposite the city of Antwerp, and can be termed as one of its suburbs. Zwijndrecht is ( with a ride ) on the highway and the railway line between Ghent - Antwerp; the village has a small railway station. The neighboring town is also accessible by tram ( through the Scheldt tunnel ).

Especially castle is heavily industrialized and is part of the industrial area, which is connected to the port of Antwerp. There are, among others, petrochemical industry, cement and rubber factories, ship repair yards etc.

History

In 1281 was built here by a local Mr Nicolaas van Kets the (1947 demolished ) Castle Craeyenhoff built. Burcht was an independent dominion, which was then the Land van Waas ( East Flanders ) belonged in the Middle Ages. From 1850 Burcht became an industrial area for the near Antwerp. The community had to suffer a lot in the First and Second World War.

Attractions

  • The municipality promotes the sculpture by many works of modern sculptors, spread over the villages in parks, squares and can be set up on street corners, etc.. Some of them are quite significant.
  • The Holy Cross Church, partly from the 16th century, is the most important building in Zwijndrecht.
  • In the nearby River Scheldt polders is a small nature reserve.
