Zwochau is a town in the municipality in the district of Wiedemar North Saxony, Saxony. Until 31 December 2012 Zwochau was an independent municipality in the administrative organization Wiedemar.

Geography and transport

The city of Halle (Saale ) is situated about 20 km to the west and the town of Delitzsch 13 km northeast of the village. The Federal Highway 9 runs west and is about the Wiedemar connection (about 3 km). The village is dominated by the large opencast mine holes of the former East German lignite Revieres. This results in the area of the village currently the Werbelin lake, the lake and the grave guard Zwochauer lake as part of the new Saxon lakes country.

The village consists of the districts Zwochau and Grebehna.

History

Zwochau was first mentioned in 1158.

Zwochau 1658 was affected by witch hunts. Anna, widow of Christopher Petzsche, 53 years old, was caught in a witch trial.

On April 1, 1936, the now-defunct because of the lignite quarrying communities Flemsdorf and Schladitz were incorporated by Zwochau.

Infrastructure

Both in Zwochau and in Grebehna there are a Lutheran Church, continues in Zwochau a Catholic church. Besides the Catholic church is a Mariapoli center of the Focolare Movement.

The St. Martin Elementary School in Zwochau - per Montessori is a fully accredited private school.

A former horse stables were on Hotel Zum Gutshof rebuilt.
