Zyryanovsk

Syrjanowsk ( kasach. Зырян; Russian Зыряновск ) is a city in Kazakhstan. It lies in East Kazakhstan region and is the capital of Rajons same name.

Geography

Syrjanowsk is located in the eastern part of the country, near the border with the Russian republic of Altai, near the river Beryozovka near its confluence with the Buchtarma. The distance to Öskemen, the capital of the region, is about 180 km. The surroundings of Syrjanowsk is characterized by the Altai.

Population

Syrjanowsk has a population of around 47,600 (2008). After the end of the Soviet Union a population decline has set in, mainly due to emigration. The city is also today still strongly influenced Russian, Russians make up about 80 % of the population of Kazakhs only around 13 %, the remainder being held by other nationalities.

History

The city was founded on 5 May 1791. Syrjanowsk received its charter on January 17, 1941.

Economy

Syrjanowsk is an industrial center for lead and zinc processing. The origins of mining in this region date back to the year 1791, when rich ore deposits were discovered here.
