Billy Gibbons and manager Bill Ham had put together in the spring of 1970 the first line-up of ZZ Top by dedicated first drummer Frank Beard and bassist Dusty Hill subsequently, both of which were preferred candidate of Gibbons. The recordings took place in Brian's Recording Studio in Tyler, Texas, instead. The album was produced by manager Bill Ham, who also participated in the songwriting for some songs. Billy Gibbons said later that the main reason for the recording of the album was that the band had the opportunity to release their album on the same record label, in which the Rolling Stones were under contract. The band remained in the opinion of Gibbons true to their roots and recorded a blues-rock album that was influenced by bands such as The Animals, The Beatles, The Kinks and The Who.

1985 album for the CD version was re-edited.
