12th Army (German Empire)

As the 12th Army / Army High Command 12 (AOK 12) was designated a major formation and the associated command authority of the German Army during the First World War ( 1914-1918). It included several Army or Reserve Corps and numerous special troops.

History

Shortly after the beginning of the war the troops of border protection in the region Graudenz were combined into one group army. This was taken on February 9, 1915 by General of Artillery Max von Gallwitz, who had previously commanded the Guard Reserve Corps. The now called " Army Group Gallwitz " designated organization reporting directly to the Upper East and has been continuously employed on the Eastern Front.

The " Army Group Gallwitz " has been continually reinforced in the course of 1915 and therefore received on 7 August 1915, the new name of the 12th Army. The headquarters was in Grodno. However, few weeks later a reorganization. The Army High Command 12 was added on 22 September 1915 due to a transfer of the Supreme Command to Serbia, there to take over the German troops of the former 11th Army. It therefore henceforth was known as the Army High Command 11 In its place on the Eastern Front joined the army high command of the recently defunct 1st Army. As of September 29, 1915, the headquarters of the new Army High Command 12 was in the city Lida.

On October 9, 1916, the 12th Army was dissolved and distributed its troops to the neighboring associations or misplaced. The High Command took over as the new army high command 8, the troops of the 8th Army, the old high command was needed elsewhere.
