• July 7: The first story about The Adventures of Pinocchio, written by Carlo Collodi Storia Di Un Burattino: In Rome appears in a weekly newspaper under the title Le Avventure di Pinocchio.
• 22 Juli/10. November: The novel La Jangada by Jules Verne published in two volumes.
• The novel The Portrait of a Lady ( Portrait of a Lady ) by Henry James first appears in book form.
• The novella The house Tellier by Guy de Maupassant appears for the first time under the title of La Maison Tellier at Paul Ollendorff in Paris.
• The unfinished novel Bouvard et Pécuche ( Bouvard and Pécuchet ) by Gustave Flaubert appears one year after Flaubert's death.
