- July 7: The first story about The Adventures of Pinocchio, written by Carlo Collodi Storia Di Un Burattino: In Rome appears in a weekly newspaper under the title Le Avventure di Pinocchio.

- The novel The Portrait of a Lady ( Portrait of a Lady ) by Henry James first appears in book form.
