1951 Pan American Games

The first Pan American Games were held in Buenos Aires. They were inaugurated by Argentine President Juan Domingo Perón and his wife Eva Perón on 25 February 1951. 2513 athletes from 21 countries participated in 20 sports.

The opening ceremony was held under 100,000 spectators at the Boca Juniors Stadium. The Argentine contingent marches since then as always a first at the opening ceremony, as Argentina was the founding state of the Pan American Games. Then the other contingents in alphabetical order and in last place following the host country. A Greek - Argentine athlete wore the lit in Olympia and brought by ship to the Americas torch into the stadium.

It was the first and last time that does not have won the most medals the U.S.. Argentina with 152 medals, including 68 gold, led the medal table. On March 9, the games were completed with 60,000 spectators.
