1953 Italian Grand Prix

The Italian Grand Prix 1953 took place on 13 September at the Monza circuit and was the last of nine rounds of the Formula 1 season 1953.

Background

Ferrari brought two prototypes of the type Ferrari 553 Squalo, which were provided for the 1954 season, with the race. However Ascari preferred the old type 500 So the two new vehicles reported by the addition of the crew ( Ascari, Farina, Villoresi and Hawthorn ) Umberto Maglioli and Piero Carini were driven. Maserati announced the fourth car of the still injured González on the two debutant Sergio Mantovani and Luigi Musso. The other vehicles controlled as usual, Fangio, Marimon and Bonetto. The British team of Connaught and H.W.M. were reported with three vehicles. Cooper reported a vehicle with Alta engine for Stirling Moss. The new Alta engine was on the line even faster than the Ferrari, but had significant weaknesses in suspension and brakes. Training

Race

Ascari used his pole position for a good start and immediately went in, but he was beset already in the first round of hard Marimon. Fangio and Farina followed close behind. Moss, meanwhile, had fallen back to the end of the field, as he took by mistake, his vehicle had an oil leak; It turned out, however, only as an overflow of excess oil. Further back in the field a similarly exciting fight between Villoresi, Hawthorn and Trintignant developed. The battle of the leaders lasted until the 46th round when Marimon reported with a broken oil cooler to the pits, lost a lap, but incorporated it back into the battle group. The group stayed together until the last corner. There Ascari lost control of his vehicle and turned. Cause of the accident was likely that he had to dodge a crowd lapped riders to hit the greasy by abrasion rubber part of the route. Farina was able to dodge the grass, Marimon, however, had no chance to avoid and hit the Ferrari on the side. Both drivers were uninjured. Fangio was the accident on the inner side of the road to escape, thus securing his first victory in a World Championship race in 1953. Farina was second, Villoresi third parties. Due to the then applicable rule that when a vehicle that should be classified, had also reached the goal, Ascari was not conducted as a third party, but as a failure.
