1954–55 DDR-Oberliga

The season 1954/55 was the sixth edition of the DDR Oberliga. Master was the SC turbine Erfurt, has added to its championship defended from the previous year. The season began on September 5, 1954 and ended on 24 April 1955.

Preseason

For the first time since its premiere season, the league had the original size again of 14 teams after the three relegated teams in the preseason followed only two riders. The number of league participants should then no longer be changed.

In addition, the year 1954 brought profound changes to the DDR football. For the targeted development of competitive sports was carried out in the districts of the establishment of so-called sports clubs (SC ) whose sections acted as a power base of various sports. In football were in this part of the majority of the league teams - so far almost exclusively as a company sports teams (BSG ) firmierten - incorporated as a football sections in the sports clubs.

In this context, the transfer of whole teams took place in some cases. So the teams Empor Lauter and Dynamo Dresden in November 1954, moved to Rostock and Berlin, and there connected to the newly established sports clubs Empor Rostock and Dynamo Berlin. The laying of the Empor team had mainly geographical reasons, as the north of the GDR in the big leagues was significantly under-represented, while alone from the district Karl- Marx-Stadt four communities played höchstklassig. Another planned relocation of the team of bismuth floodplains for the same sports club after Karl- Marx-Stadt failed because of popular protest, which culminated in the strike threats bismuth miners. Thus, the newly formed football section of the bismuth SC Karl- Marx-Stadt remained resident in Aue.

As part of the government-sponsored district centers of excellence, the sports clubs were entrusted with the education of the most talented and ablest squad athletes their catchment areas. While thus future in football sections, the most powerful players were concentrated, the company sports teams had usually their most promising talents - usually already in adolescence - give to the sports clubs. As in other team sports thus arose in premier league football, a two-class society, which should be increasingly characterized by the dominance of the SC team. To the championship in 1954/55 played the teams of ten sports clubs and four company sports teams.

Sports club training

The following name changes took place during the formation of sport clubs within the league. The transition of the BSG Chemie Leipzig in the SC locomotive was already nearing season opener held ( on 1 September). All other club training were completed only during the season from September to November 1954.

Course of the season

The course of the season was significantly affected by the restructuring. So Dynamo Dresden has long been the leader, but could after the delegation to Berlin not maintain the performance and joined as the third- worst team back round the season from only seventh. Also for Empor Lauter, the move itself was adversely affected. Until the move to the eight games the team was in third place, after they have slipped to ninth. Making matters worse was that some players move to other teams from the Erzgebirge. The most consistent benefits offered Turbine Erfurt and bismuth Karl- Marx-Stadt, both logically also occupied the first two places. Turbine became the first team that successfully defended their football championship title in the GDR.

For the runner-up last year, Chemie Leipzig, however, the season was disappointing and we ended up only in eleventh place. Even worse, it was for the Master from 1952 turbine hall, which was now connected to the SC Chemie Halle- Leuna. Hall dismounted together with Meerane from the league. For Meerane it was the last season in the big leagues.
