1960 Summer Paralympics

The first Paralympic Summer Games - at that time still under the name of International Stoke Mandeville Games - were held in the Italian capital Rome from 18 September to 25 September 1960. They began seven days after the completion of the XVII. Summer Olympic Games at the same venues. The Paralympics is the Olympics for people with physical disabilities. Among the competitions only paraplegic athletes were first admitted. 400 athletes from 23 nations took part in the competitions in eight sports.

Ceremonies

Opening Ceremony

The opening ceremony of the Paralympic Games 1960 was held on September 18, 1960 in front of around 5,000 spectators instead Acqua Acetosa Stadium. The Italian Minister for Public Health Camillo Giardina then declared the Games open.

Closing Ceremony

The closing ceremony took place on 25 September 1960 in the presence of the patron of the Games, Donna Carla Gronchi Sir Ludwig Guttmann and the Palazzo dello Sport in the Olympic Village instead. Guttmann summed up the game as follows: " The vast majority of competitors and accompanying persons has been able to facilitate the re-integration of paraplegics in the society and in the world of sports. "
