1971 South American U-20 Championship

The V. Youth Football South American Championship 1971 was held until March 25, 1971 in Paraguay from March 1, 1971.

Paraguay set up so that after 1967 for the second time in succession this tournament, because no other national football association agreed to. In the two semifinals to Argentina were compared against Uruguay (1:2) against Peru and Paraguay ( 3-1 ).

Due to a 1-1 draw in the final match between Paraguay and Uruguay was resorted to the decision on goal difference in the semi-finals. Therefore, from the event went the team of Paraguay as the winner. Trained was this Benjamín Laterza, who succeeded his predecessor Sinforiano García in this position only three weeks before the tournament starts.

Top scorers of the tournament were the Uruguayan Ricardo Islas and the Paraguayans Cristóbal Maldonado with four goals scored.
