Background

After a good idea at the Grand Prix of Great Britain Arturo Merzario was allowed despite the return of convalescent from his broken arm tribe driver Clay Regazzoni deny another Grand Prix for Ferrari use. This was also facilitated by the fact that the actual third factory driver for the team, Mario Andretti, as well as his McLaren standing under contract compatriot Peter Revson because of a parallel event USAC race was not present. Revsons representation took over once again Brian Redman.

Since Henri Pescarolo had the new Politoys FX3 when first used in the British Grand Prix severely damaged, Frank Williams Racing Cars came back as before as pure March customer team.

In B.R.M. led to the steady change of drivers this season continues, so this time had to do without the participation of Peter Gethin and Jackie Oliver in favor of Pure and Howden Ganley Wisell.

Training

The training has already provided the first signs of an impending dominance of the Nordschleife specialists Jacky Ickx by this undercutting the last year set up by Jackie Stewart lap time by 12 seconds, and thus secured the pole position. Stewart and Emerson Fittipaldi also in each case remained under 7:10 min. Ronnie Peterson and François Cevert completed the first five places.

Race

Ickx continued his pole position into a leadership that he did not relinquish it until the finish. During the race, he improved in 1971, drawn up by Cevert best time for the fastest lap around seven seconds 7:13,6 min. While Stewart and Peterson fought wheel to wheel in the early rounds for second place.

The privateer Dave Charlton was forced to retire due to illness the race after four laps.

Fittipaldi, who had initially fallen behind Peterson and Regazzoni, took on strong and was able to overtake in the second round Regazzoni. In the fifth round he managed this with Peterson. This turned in the ninth round and fell behind Regazzoni. Shortly thereafter, smoke came out of the transmission of the Lotus 72 of Fittipaldi, whereupon the leading in the world championship driver had to abandon the race.

Shortly before the end Regazzoni was just ahead of Stewart in second place behind Ickx. On the final lap Stewart attempted an overtaking maneuver in the area of the section Hatzenbach to preserve his title chances after the failure Fittipaldi. The two collided, whereupon Stewart crashed into the barriers and the race could not finish. Due to its distance traveled, however, he was still regarded as eleventh. Regazzoni was able to continue and ensure a Ferrari one-two. Peterson managed the only podium of the March factory team this season.

Jacky Ickx won first and only Grand Slam of his Formula 1 career, by having achieved both the pole position and the fastest lap of the race and also led the race from the first to the last lap. However, it turned out in the course of its further seven years in F1 discovered that it was also his last Grand Prix victory.
