Background

After the first edition of the Grand Prix of Brazil had not yet counted the year before the World Cup, the race was first held in 1973 with world championship status. Not least the fact that the locals was reigning World Champion Emerson Fittipaldi, triggered a large audience interest.

All teams arrived in the same band members directly from Buenos Aires, where two weeks earlier had been the Grand Prix of Argentina. Only the local guest driver Luiz Bueno complemented the field by a used Surtees TS9B rented for the race. It was his first and only participation in a Formula 1 race with world championship status.

Training

Lotus had done in the week before the Grand Prix extensive test rides on the route to increase Emerson Fittipaldi's chances to win on home soil. The experience acquired paid off in official practice in which both regular driver is qualified for the front row, with the pole position with two tenths of a second ahead went to Ronnie Peterson. It was the first pole of his career. Besides the two Lotus drivers, no other drivers achieved a lap time under 2:32 min.

The three- vehicles first series was completed by Ferrari driver Jacky Ickx. Behind the Clay Regazzoni and Denis Hulme qualified for the second row. The third series consisted of Carlos Pace Carlos Reutemann and Jackie Stewart.

Race

At very high temperatures on race day, the spectators enjoyed a perfect start two local pilots. Emerson Fittipaldi took the lead and Carlos Pace shot from sixth place on the grid ahead to second place. This was followed by Jackie Stewart, Ronnie Peterson and Jacky Ickx.

Pace could not last long its very good position. Already in the second round he was overtaken by Stewart, a little later by Peterson. The Swede then dueled until the sixth round with Stewart for second place before he came off because of damage to the wheel mounting of the track and crashed.

Ickx arrived meanwhile at Pace over to third. The rankings at the top then remained constant over several rounds, while Denis Hulme for voltage caused by always caught up to the leaders. After Pace in the tenth round due to a suspension damage had to give up, Hulme overhauled in the twelfth round of the fourth-placed Jean -Pierre Beltoise and quickly closed on Ickx on, he was able to overtake three laps later also.

As Ickx had to make a pit stop at the end of the race because of a flat tire, Beltoise retired due to a electrical malfunction and Clay Regazzoni had also let new tires in the pits, ultimately went to the fourth place at Arturo Merzario who went from 17th on the grid on the grid had.

Emerson Fittipaldi won for the first time his home Grand Prix in his home town and thus celebrated the second victory in the second race of the season. He had also achieved, but at the same time with Denis Hulme set the fastest race lap.
