Season overview
Hamburger SV won in the 1978/79 season his first German championship in the Bundesliga, the fourth overall. After the final whistle of the final home game, which lost the HSV against Bayern Munich 1:2, it came at the storming of the lawn by viewers an unprecedented Massendrängelei with a total of 72 casualties. Fortuna Dusseldorf was German Cup and reached the final of the European Cup Winners' Cup, which the Fortuna lost 3:4 aet against FC Barcelona in Basel. In the Bundesliga took place 7th Fortuna Dusseldorf striker Allofs was with 22 goals Bundesliga top scorer.
The three climbers ( Arminia Bielefeld, the 1st FC Nuremberg, and SV Darmstadt 98 ) went off again.
