1978 World Ice Hockey Championships
The games of the A group of the 45th Ice Hockey World Championship and 56th Hockey Championships were held until May 14, 1978 in Prague, Czechoslovakia on 26 April. The B group played from March 17 to 26 in Belgrade in Yugoslavia and the crews of the C group met from 10 to 19 March in the Canary Islands in Las Palmas ( Spain). It was attended by a total of 24 teams.
The competition format of previous years was maintained. A politically -related scandal, there was after the World Cup ahead of the Ice Hockey World Championships 1979., The People's Republic of China, provided as host of the C- WM 1979, refused the first time participating in the South Korean entry visas. The visa dispute led to serious diplomatic tensions between the two countries. As a consequence thereof, the C- Cup hosts China was revoked and reissued to Spain, which agreed to host the short term. Moreover, in order to prevent a potentially fraught with significant complications direct encounter between China and South Korea, China, it was decided as a C- Group third parties and Denmark as a C- group with fourth to move up in the B group. There was thus in this year 4 improving in the B group, which was thereby increased for one year to 10 teams.
The A- Cup in Prague was the first world championship for years, in which the USSR was not as hot favorites in the tournament. Because of the home advantage and the title gains in the previous two years took on this role a Czechoslovakia. In fact, the Czechoslovaks looked up to the last game like the recent World Cup, when the Soviets the sheet still applied and the 15th World Cup and the 18th European title secured. Canada secured his first World Cup medal since 1968.
The second U-20 World Youth Championship took place in various cities in Canada this year. The Games were held in the period 22 December 1977 to 3 January 1978. Have participated again 8 teams. The USSR won their second title.
