In the final, Cliff Thorburn was able to prevail with 18:16 against Alex Higgins. The last frame of the Finals were overshadowed by the hostage-taking in the Iranian Embassy in London in 1980. The Welsh defending champion Terry Griffiths was eliminated in the second round against Steve Davis.
The total prize money was almost doubled from 35,000 to 60,000 pounds compared to last year. The participants in the final round would be expanded from 16 to 24.
