1986 UEFA European Under-18 Championship
The fifth U-18 Football Championship was held in the period from 11 to 15 October 1986, Yugoslavia. The title was won by the German Democratic Republic a 3-1 win over Italy. The Federal Republic of Germany finished third. Defending Hungary did not qualify for the finals as Austria and Switzerland.
For the first time the tournament was played with only eight teams. Also, the mode with knockout system was new.
Mode
The eight teams played in the knockout system for the title. The winners of the quarter-finals reached the semi-finals, the winners of the finals. The semifinal losers contested the match for third place. The losers of the quarter-finals played at two places available for the Junior World Cup in 1987. Semifinalists also qualified for the World Cup.
