1988–89 Soviet League Cup
The 1989 season was the 21st and final edition of the Soviet Hockey Cup. In contrast to the other sweeps the competition was held in 1989 as a pure League Cup. This only teams in the league were Wysschaja take part entitled, in this case, only the 10 best teams. Cup Winners' Cup was the third time Krylia Sovetov Moscow. Best scorer of the tournament was Dmytro Chrystytsch Sokol Kiev with ten goals.
Preliminary round
Dynamo Moscow Krylia Sovetov Moscow, CSKA Moscow and Chimik Woskressensk received a bye for the first round or the quarter-finals due to their placement in the Wysschaja league. The teams ranked 6-10 play a single round with round-trip game, so 10 games per team. The top two teams qualified for the Cup quarter-finals.
