1989 Men's European Volleyball Championship
The Volleyball European Championship Men 1989 took place from 23 September to 1 October in Sweden. Germany was represented among the twelve participants with the GDR and the Federal German selection. The games were held in Stockholm and Örebro. Italy won the title for the first time.
Mode
First, a preliminary round was held, in which the twelve teams were divided into two groups of six. The top two teams in each group reached the semi-finals. The third-placed and fourth played for places five to eight, the rest of the team to the ranks of nine to twelve.

The Federal Republic of Germany played with Christoph Schieder, Oliver Oetke, Jörg Bertholdt, Michael Dorn Home, Leif Andersson, Paul Schmeing, David student, Frank Stutzke, Edgar sick, Peter Bauer, Burkhard brews and Sven Eggert.

Qualification
Sweden was set as host. The top three teams in the European championship in 1987 were also automatically qualified. These were the Soviet Union as the defending champion, the Second and the Third France Greece.
18 teams played in four groups of eight other places. The top two teams in each group qualified for the final tournament.
