Background

A compared to the Grand Prix of Great Britain two weeks earlier unchanged participants competed in Germany for the tenth World Championship race of the year.

Training

The two Williams drivers Nigel Mansell and Riccardo Patrese qualified sovereign for the front row before the two McLaren MP4/7A of Ayrton Senna and Gerhard Berger. Jean Alesi shared the third row with Michael Schumacher. The fourth series was formed by the two Ligier drivers Érik Comas and Thierry Boutsen.

Race

Patrese managed to the best start, which put him on the first few meters ahead. Already at the first corner but he was again overtaken by his teammate Mansell. Behind the two Williams followed at this time each case the two pilots of the Team McLaren, Benetton, Ferrari, Ligier and Lotus.

Except for the two Williams drivers all counterparties opted for a race without temporary pit stop. Senna got by on lap 15 to second place and Schumacher on lap 20 to the third place ahead of Patrese.

In the 33rd round Patrese overtook Schumacher and caught up with Senna. When trying these to overtake on the last lap, he turned a corner. Due to its distance traveled, he was still regarded as a rollercoaster. Mansell won ahead of Senna, Schumacher, Brundle, Alesi and Comas.

With his eighth win of the season Mansell presented already in the tenth race of the year in 1988 established a record of Senna.
