First in the season 1996/97 the German Bundesliga and thus German master of men was the FC Bayern Munich.

Season overview

The season after the successful European Championships in England began with new coach faces. FC Bayern Munich trained again Giovanni Trapattoni, Bayer 04 Leverkusen presented with Christoph Daum a returnee from Turkey and VfB Stuttgart of today's national coach Joachim Loew celebrated his first title in his coaching career.

Leverkusen was the surprise of the season. Could 1995/96 with difficulty keeping the class, it was now playing for the championship with. A large contribution to the success of Leverkusen had Ulf Kirsten, the scorer also. Champion Bayern with a 4-2 win over VfB Stuttgart, Leverkusen while at the same time lost 0-4 in Cologne on 33 match day.

Cup winner was the VfB Stuttgart with a 2-0 victory over the then third division side Energie Cottbus. The cup final was the last joint appearance of the so-called " magic triangle " at VfB Stuttgart. This consisted of Fredi Bobic, Giovane Élber and Krassimir Balakov who attended with the Swabians a lot of attention. However, Giovane Élber changed after this season for Bayern Munich, but not without his two goals to make against Cottbus VfB Stuttgart for cup winners.

After the season goodbye Jürgen Klinsmann towards Italy, Uwe Seeler resigned from the office of HSV- president. With the SC Freiburg, Fortuna Dusseldorf and FC St. Pauli the league adopted three "cult clubs " at the end of the season.

Positive surprise was the next to Leverkusen VfL Bochum, who qualified as a climber for the UEFA Cup. International it ran perfectly from the German perspective, for the FC Schalke 04 won the UEFA Cup and Borussia Dortmund won the Champions League. This was previously only German club in 1975.
