Background
After the Grand Prix of Germany Michael Schumacher was leading the drivers' standings with 37 points ahead of David Coulthard and 43 points ahead of Ralf Schumacher. Ferrari resulted in the constructors' championship with 58 points ahead of McLaren -Mercedes with 68 points ahead of Williams - BMW.
With Michael Schumacher, Jacques Villeneuve and Mika Hakkinen ( twice each ) were three former winners of this Grand Prix.
Heinz -Harald Frentzen returned after a race break and took over the cockpit of Jean Alesi at Prost. Alesi took his hand, the cockpit of Ricardo Zonta at Jordan, who had held this a race.
Training
In the first free practice session Michael Schumacher set the fastest time ahead of his teammate Rubens Barrichello and Mika Häkkinen. The second free practice session ended Coulthard was fastest. He was followed by the Ferrari driver Schumacher and Barrichello.
Qualifying
In qualifying, Michael Schumacher, the 41 pole position of a Formula 1 career, followed by Coulthard and Barrichello secured.
Warm-Up
In the warm-up Coulthard was fastest, followed by Michael Schumacher and Barrichello.
Race
Barrichello started well and Coulthard had already overtaken at the first corner. In the back of the pack turned Eddie Irvine from the track and stayed stuck in the gravel. Jenson Button had an early start and got off the racing line, a 10-second stop-and -go penalty.
After the first lap, Michael Schumacher led in front of Barrichello, Coulthard, Ralf Schumacher, Jarno Trulli and Häkkinen.
In the initial phase, the first three leaders of Ralf Schumacher dropped off, who in turn had moved out himself a big lead to Trulli. Trulli was during its always under pressure from Häkkinen.
In round nine Luciano Burti turned without contact of the track and ended his race in the gravel. Three laps later, Enrique Bernoldi made the same mistake and had to just finish his race.
Rubens Barrichello was not able to follow his teammate and Schumacher drove out a lead. Although Barrichello's lap times were slower, Coulthard did not come over.
In the 28 lap Michael Schumacher came to his first pit stop. He dropped back to third position, just ahead of his brother Ralf. Three laps later, Barrichello pitted, so that Coulthard had a free ride. A Round To It came Coulthard on his pit stop. He came just ahead of Barrichello back on track.
In the meantime, Trulli had made his first pit stop, allowing Häkkinen having a free ride went fast lap times.
After Coulthard first Barrichello had been able to solve, Barrichello was faster again and made good on Coulthard time.
In the second phase of pit stops came again in Michael Schumacher was the first of the leaders. The guide took Coulthard. Barrichello came two laps later to his final pit stop, Coulthard another round it. Again, there was a change of position.
It led Michael Schumacher before Barrichello, Coulthard, Ralf Schumacher and Hakkinen.
Häkkinen in the meantime fast lap times and closed on Ralf Schumacher. Seven laps from the end, however, he had come to a third, unscheduled pit stop because the tank system was not functioning properly at the second stop. Since the projection of Häkkinen before the pit stop was great to his pursuers Nick Heidfeld, he lost no position.
Michael Schumacher won the race ahead of his team mate Barrichello and Coulthard. It was his 51st victory and the Formula 1, with which he set the record of Alain Prost. The remaining points went to Ralf Schumacher, Hakkinen and Heidfeld. Michael Schumacher also secured ahead of his fourth World Cup title and Ferrari won the Constructors' Championship.
