Background

After the Belgian Grand Prix, Michael Schumacher led the drivers' championship with 47 points unassailable before David Coulthard and 56 points ahead of Rubens Barrichello. Ferrari was in the constructors' championship with 71 points ahead of McLaren -Mercedes with 93 points ahead of Williams - BMW also unassailable.

With Michael Schumacher ( three times), Heinz-Harald Frentzen and Coulthard ( once each ) were three former winner of this Grand Prix.

Two riders made ​​their debut in this race. Tomáš Enge replaced the injured Luciano Burti for the rest of the season. He was the first Czech Formula 1 racing driver. Tarso Marques was also replaced for the remainder of the season. For him, drove Alex Yoong, the first Malaysian Formula 1 racing driver.

Due to the terrorist attacks on 11 September 2001 in the week before the race started some teams with modified coatings. Qualifying

Race

In the grid there were two drivers who had technical problems on their vehicles. Nick Heidfeld and Giancarlo Fisichella were pushed before the start of the formation lap in the box and crossed over to the replacement vehicles with which they had to start from the pit lane.

All drivers were well away from their starting positions. Montoya maintained his lead ahead of Barrichello. Ralf Schumacher had a good start from fourth position, overtaking Michael Schumacher, but which it succeeded in the first round to come over again to his brother.

In the first turn collided very well started with Jenson Button Jarno Trulli. Trulli turned consequently and rejoined the race at the end of the field again. For Coulthard was the race after six laps to the end, his McLaren suffered an engine failure. A little later, Ralf Schumacher lost the connection to the leader. In round nine Barrichello finally overhauled Montoya and leading the race. Michael Schumacher Montoya put under pressure, but was unable to overtake him.

On lap 15 Eddie Irvine had an engine failure. Five laps later, Häkkinen finished with a gearbox failure his race.

On lap 19 Michael Schumacher came to his first pit stop and headed back in fourth place on the track. One lap later, Barrichello came to his first pit stop in which he lost by difficulties with the tank system time. Montoya took over by the lead again. The Williams driver stayed longer on the track and had to stop only once. Montoya went in round 28 on the box, Ralf Schumacher on lap 40 Montoya remained after his pit stop ahead of Ralf Schumacher, but was behind Barrichello, who had to make a second stop. Then Barrichello came in third place back on the track. Seven laps to go, he managed to overtake Ralf Schumacher.

Montoya stayed until the very end in the lead. It was the first victory of his Formula 1 career and also the first victory of a Colombian in the Formula 1 World Championship.
