Background

After the Grand Prix of Austria Michael Schumacher led the drivers' standings with four points ahead of David Coulthard and with 24 points ahead of Rubens Barrichello. Ferrari resulted in the constructors' championship with 18 points ahead of McLaren -Mercedes with 42 points ahead of Williams - BMW.

With Michael Schumacher ( four times ), Olivier Panis, Mika Hakkinen and David Coulthard ( once each ) were four former winners of this Grand Prix.

Training

In the first free practice Mika Häkkinen drove the fastest time. He was 0.463 seconds ahead of Michael Schumacher, Ralf Schumacher was third fastest, who already had more than a second behind. In the second free practice changed in the order of the first three nothing. The distances between the drivers, however, had shortened. Michael Schumacher were missing on Hakkinen now 0.174 seconds, Ralf Schumacher 0.443 seconds.

Qualifying

Warm Up

Race

The launching of the pole position Coulthard remained at start in the lap stand. His mechanics, however, managed his car quickly to start again, so he could follow behind the field. However, his original starting position he could not take it again, so he started from the last position.

The launch went smoothly then all drivers. Juan Pablo Montoya overtook Eddie Irvine in the first corner and was the only one of the top six, who made a good position.

In the first round, Nick Heidfeld made ​​a mistake and crashed into the track barrier, the race was then stopped for him. After the first lap, Michael Schumacher led ahead of Häkkinen, Barrichello, Ralf Schumacher, Montoya and Irvine. Coulthard was after the first round at the end of the field.

On lap twelve Häkkinen suddenly got problems with his McLaren. He drove very slowly and was overtaken by Barrichello. Two laps later he came again into the box, but now give up to the race. Two other pilots had come in to unscheduled pit stops: Panis finished his race, Kimi Raikkonen led his race after a long stop with several laps down on.

After 20 laps Michael Schumacher continued to lead his team-mate Barrichello, Ralf Schumacher, Irvine, Jarno Trulli and Jacques Villeneuve. For him, however, this meant the end of his race, because he is not drove with problems to his vehicle for safety reasons. One lap later, Barrichello came to his only pit stop and Michael Schumacher took the lead again.

On lap 66 Coulthard completed the last to his scheduled pit stop. He was before his stop to position six and thus drove up in the points. Because of the lighter cars drove Coulthard before his stop many fast laps. The fact moved out ahead of Jenson Button was enough, so he remained in sixth.

Jean Alesi, who drove in fifth after the pit stops, came eight laps to go after a touch of the guardrail again to a unscheduled pit stop to allow his vehicle to investigate consequential damages. Alesi lost through this stop number five on Coulthard.

Michael Schumacher won after 1:47:22,561 hours ago Barrichello and Irvine. The remaining points went to Villeneuve, Alesi and Coulthard.

Michael Schumacher increased his lead in the championship by eight points to Coulthard. Ferrari produced by the double victory his lead to 14 points from McLaren - Mercedes.
