2008–09 Austrian Cup

The Cup of the Austrian Football Association was played in the 2008 /09 season for the 74th time. After the Cupbewerb because of the EURO 2008 was played only at amateur basis in the previous year, he found again this season instead of the usual. The official name of this competition was the fifth time in a row " Stiegl Cup".

The victory was the fourth time in series to FK Austria Wien, of the first division club FC Admira Wacker Mödling to a 1-1 (0-0 ) defeated draw in extra time 3-1 in the final on 24 May 2009 in Mattersburger Pappelstadion. The other opponents of Vienna Austria on the way to the Cup victory were FC Admira Wacker Mödling II ( away, 3-0), FC Lustenau 07 ( abroad, 5:1), SK Sturm Graz ( away, 0-0, 1-1 after extension, 5:3 on penalties ) and SC Magna Wiener Neustadt ( away, 1-0).

Mode

On OFB Cup of the season 2008/ 09 participated a total of 58 amateur clubs from nine provincial associations and the 22 professional clubs from the Bundesliga and First League. The amateur clubs playing in a preliminary round of 29 clubs that competed in the first round, where joined by other added nine amateur clubs. For the first time had to play in the first round, all 10 Bundesliga clubs. There were the 12 first league teams that made up the 60 clubs in the first round to a total of 38 amateur and 10 Bundesliga clubs. The qualification criteria for participation in the group stage were regulated differently in the individual federal states. Each state awarded a predetermined quota of grid positions at clubs from the Regional and the respective country's highest league. A fixed place in the second round got the SV Horn, in the previous year the Amateurcup but not included in the official statistics OFB won.

First round

In the first round played 60 clubs. Here started all 22 professional clubs in the Bundesliga and First League and the nine provincial Cup winner. There were also the 29 winning teams from the preliminary round.

This Cup season began for the clubs in the Bundesliga better than those of the 2007/08 season, for every ten Austrian First Division clubs won their games. Of the clubs from the first division failed with FC Gratkorn, Austria Lustenau and Wacker Innsbruck, only three of twelve clubs.
