2010 Bahrain Grand Prix

The Bahrain Grand Prix 2010 took place on 14 March at the Bahrain International Circuit in as- Sachir place and was the first race of the Formula 1 2010 season.

Background

For the first time since 2006, the season opener was again held at the Bahrain International Circuit. Also new was the design of the circuit, which was expanded to include a new section between curves 4 and 15. Length of the route changed as a result by 887 meters - from 5.412 to 6.299 km. From the Formula 1 2011 season but went back to the original and shorter version of the circuit.

As new teams Lotus, HRT and Virgin went for the first time at the start. The Constructors' World Champion Brawn GP was acquired by Mercedes and renamed Mercedes Grand Prix. For the German automaker, it meant the return to Formula 1 as a works team. The BMW Sauber team was bought back by Peter Sauber.

Karun Chandhok, Lucas di Grassi, Nico Hulkenberg, Vitaly Petrov and Bruno Senna gave their Formula 1 debut. Michael Schumacher returned after three years break for Mercedes in Formula 1 back, earned his 250th Grand Prix, and Pedro de la Rosa returned for Sauber as a race driver in Formula 1. Also back at the start were Timo Glock and Felipe Massa, who had to pause a few races after accidents in the preseason. World Champion Jenson Button won his first race for McLaren - Mercedes.

With Fernando Alonso, Massa (each twice), Schumacher and Button ( once each ) were all former winners of this Grand Prix.

For the first time since 1993, the refueling was banned back in the race. In addition, a new points system was introduced, in which were the top ten drivers scored points for the first time. Furthermore, 24 pilots were first time since 1995 registered for the competition. In addition, it was the first Grand Prix, in which a former racing driver was used as a racing commissioner. The four -time Formula 1 World Champion Alain Prost took over this task in the season opener.

Training

In the first free practice session of the season Force India - Mercedes driver Adrian Sutil scored the fastest lap. In second and third place followed by Fernando Alonso and Robert Kubica. In the second free practice Nico Rosberg took the lead of the field. Lewis Hamilton was in front of Rosberg's team-mate Schumacher second. In the third free practice session on Saturday Alonso set the fastest lap in front of Rosberg and Mark Webber.

Qualifying

As in the third free practice Alonso scored in the first part of qualifying the fastest lap. The HRT, Lotus and Virgin pilots and Jaime Alguersuari dropped out. In the second qualifying section Sebastian Vettel took the lead of the field. The Sauber and Williams drivers Vitantonio Liuzzi and Sébastien Buemi and Petrov retired from. In the last part of qualifying Vettel was the fastest, and thus secured the pole position. Of course two and three Massa and Alonso went into the race.

Race

At the start of the first race of the season Vettel held the lead ahead of Alonso, who was able to overtake his teammate Massa before the first corner. In addition, there were further shifts: Mercedes driver Rosberg overtook Hamilton and his team-mate Schumacher went, as well as Button, Webber to pass. Webber lost a bit of oil in the first corner, creating a cloud of smoke was triggered and Sutil collided after a spin with Kubica. Sutil and Kubica lost by a few places. In contrast to his team-mate Kubica Petrov had a good start on his debut and moved up from 17th to eleventh place.

Already after the first round of the race for Chandhok was terminated because he had turned after a mistake. Also for di Grassi, the race was over after a short time, as he had to complain a hydraulic defect in the third round. The first three pilots sat down successively from the rest of the field from where they kept their distances to each other constantly. Before the top group completed their pit stops, Kamui Kobayashi and Petrov retired with technical problems and Glock had to give up a little later.

Be first Kubica was in the eleventh round to the box. After the other teams saw that the pole achieved the fastest lap times, teams and Hamilton and Schumacher reacted began their pit stops. Within the next two rounds, the remaining drivers that were on the first eight places to complete their pit stop came. The only shift in this case was found by Hamilton filed past Rosberg.

After the 19th round Senna was also excreted, was from the newly ascended race teams only Lotus in the race. The situation changed at the top, in that the Ferrari could reduce their deficit to Vettel something. After also de la Rosa had his race ended prematurely with a technical defect, intensified its pressure on Vettel and Alonso was initially open to the Red Bull drivers. However, his tire was not holding the loads and he first had to take something out pace.

A little later, the Spaniards moved but finally passed Vettel. To the rescue came to his mind that the German due to a technical fault could not drive with full commitment. While we had suspected damage to his exhaust during the race, it turned out after the race that stops a spark plug his Renault engine was responsible for the loss of power. One lap after Alonso overtook Massa and His teammate Vettel and provided for a dual leadership of the Scuderia.

Eleven laps Vettel had to give third place to Hamilton. His margin over fifth-placed Rosberg, however, was so great that he kept the fourth place. At the end Alonso won his first race for Ferrari ahead of Massa. Behind the Ferrari driver was Hamilton in third place. The other points went to Vettel, Rosberg, Schumacher, Button, Webber, Liuzzi and Barrichello.

Shortly before the race had even Buemi and Jarno Trulli park their cars. Both came however in the standings.

Alonso was his victory for the fifth Ferrari driver after Juan Manuel Fangio (1956 ), Mario Andretti (1971 ), Nigel Mansell (1989) and Kimi Raikkonen (2007), who won his debut race for the Italians. The Spaniard took over after almost three years, the leadership of the drivers' world championship. Lastly, he was also read on after the Monaco Grand Prix 2007.
