Qualifying

The first qualifying session was interrupted after only two minutes, as Vitaly Petrov exit of the eleventh curve on the curb, which was still wet as opposed to the route, came, and turned off the track. To restart all pilots immediately went back on the track, because rain was announced for the next few minutes. After a round in which turned some pilots due to the incipient rain, the track was so wet that all the pits had to switch to intermediates. Although it had stopped raining, but the track was still wet in some places, so the pilots at the end switched back to slicks. Nico Rosberg coped best with the conditions and achieved the fastest lap. Besides Petrov retired Lucas di Grassi and Jarno Trulli and HRT and Sauber drivers, both were flying in the same curve of the track, from.

In the second qualifying session, it had stopped raining and there were only a few parts of the track wet. Hamilton set the fastest time under these conditions. Timo Glock, Heikki Kovalainen and Vitantonio Liuzzi as well as the Toro Rosso and Mercedes drivers dropped out. In the third segment Webber posted the fastest lap and secured the pole position ahead of Hamilton and Kubica. Since it started to rain lightly again to the end, no pilot was the time of Webber drive more.

Rubens Barrichello qualified in seventh place in Belgium for the 300th time for a Grand Prix. As he paused to lap at startup when the two races, but he will have to wait two additional races to his 300th start.

Race

The start of the Belgian Grand Prix took place under dry conditions. Webber, who was on pole position came away not good and dropped back to fifth place. Hamilton made a better start and took the lead ahead of Kubica and Button. During the first round, it had started in the last curves to rain lightly. The track was wet, therefore, in the Bus Stop chicane and several drivers missed the braking point. This Barrichello Alonso drove into the back and turned the Ferrari drivers. While Alonso drove after a pit stop, was the race for Barrichello, who had caused the accident ended.

After Button had taken on Kubica over second place, the safety car came out on the track at the Williams of Barrichello to recover. During the safety car phase the rain stopped in the stretch again, and the track dried off quickly. Alonso, who had changed after the collision on intermediates, came after the restart to pit again to change back to slicks. At the restart, Hamilton kept the lead. However, Kubica lost his third place Vettel. After five laps, the race was for Bruno Senna, who gave up after a spin with a suspension failure at the box ended.

At the top of Hamilton sat by his teammate, whose front wing was slightly damaged, from. Button was planning to change the front wing at the mandatory pit stop and fell by the wayside. Vettel took on button and put him under pressure. Meanwhile, the Mercedes drivers and Alonso worked again forward. While the Mercedes drivers had to start the race from the back, Alonso had dropped back by his two pit stops at the end of the field, and had to overtake some pilots. However, Rosberg was not consistently forward. Petrov, who had also start from further back, attacked him on the Kemmel straight and overtook him to Les Combes. Rosberg lost something swing and was overtaken in the Malmedy by his teammate Schumacher, where there was a small contact between the teammates.

While behind Button formed a small group of vehicles, it started in the back of the line again to rain lightly. After Vettel was close exit of the BLANCHIMONT behind Button, he attempted an overtaking maneuver. Here, the Red Bull driver lost control of his vehicle and drove head-on into the radiator of buttons McLaren. Vettel was able continue on after a pit stop, Button had to finish the race on the spot. The second place took over Kubica.

After the pit stop from Vettel, he was behind Liuzzi and overtook him to the bus stop chicane. However, the Italians countered and overtook the Red Bull drivers back on the Kemmel straight. But to further position battles between the two, it did not come first, since Vettel was given a drive-through penalty for his collision with Button.

After the leading pilots had completed their pit stop, there was no change to the order and Hamilton increased his lead more likely to continue. Vettel had already caught up on its backlog Liuzzi after a few rounds again and it came to a duel between the two again. This time though Vettel went on Liuzzi past, but the Italians touched a rear Vettel and the tire suffered a loss. Since the incident occurred in the last corner and he therefore had to drive a complete lap with a damaged tire back to the pits, Vettel lost a lot of time.

Ten laps to go it started to rain again. This time the rain was so strong that all pilots had to change to intermediates or rain tires. The top four pilots remained longest outside and Hamilton almost lost with this strategy, everything, as he slid into the gravel. But he could leave again, and retained his lead, thanks to the larger projection on Kubica. This time it came in the box shifts because Red Bull with a quick pit stop, Webber enabled overtake Kubica. The strategy of Mercedes drivers who joined their mandatory pit stop with the change to rain tires, went on and both drivers were also after the pit stop in the upper middle.

Shortly before the end of the race once again came to a safety car phase, because Alonso had turned, and was turned back by a strike to the limit back on the track. Hamilton defended the restart, however, sovereign leadership. Between the Mercedes drivers it came again to the team-internal duel and Rosberg passed by Schumacher. The maneuver took place at the same location as the first duel of the two racers.

Finally, Hamilton won with a start - to-finish victory for the third time this season a Grand Prix. Webber came before Kubica finished second. Massa, who drove an unspectacular, but error-free, race, finished the race in fourth place ahead of Sutil. In the sixth and seventh Rosberg and Schumacher finished the race. While Rosberg had improved by eight places in the race, Schumacher made even 14 positions. The other points went to Kamui Kobayashi, Petrov and Liuzzi, who benefited from a subsequently imposed 20 -second penalty against Jaime Alguersuari, who had missed a chicane.
