Background
After the Hungarian Grand Prix Mark Webber led the drivers' standings with four points ahead of Lewis Hamilton and ten points ahead of Sebastian Vettel. Red Bull -Renault in the constructors' championship lead with eight points ahead of McLaren -Mercedes and 74 points ahead of Ferrari.
The Renault R30 was extended by a F-duct.
With Michael Schumacher ( six times ) and Felipe Massa (once) were two former winners of this Grand Prix.
Training
In the first free practice session, which took place on a wet track, Fernando Alonso posted the fastest lap. Hamilton took second place ahead of Robert Kubica. In the second session, which was held at which dry conditions, Alonso kept the top position in front of Adrian Sutil and Hamilton. The third free training initially took place under dry conditions. Towards the end of the training, however, it began to rain. The fastest time achieved Webber on the dry track. Hamilton and Vettel finished second and third respectively.
Qualifying
The first qualifying session was interrupted after only two minutes, as Vitaly Petrov exit of the eleventh curve on the curb, which was still wet as opposed to the route, came, and turned off the track. To restart all pilots immediately went back on the track, because rain was announced for the next few minutes. After a round in which turned some pilots due to the incipient rain, the track was so wet that all the pits had to switch to intermediates. Although it had stopped raining, but the track was still wet in some places, so the pilots at the end switched back to slicks. Nico Rosberg coped best with the conditions and achieved the fastest lap. Rubens Barrichello qualified in seventh place in Belgium for the 300th time for a Grand Prix. As he paused to lap at startup when the two races, but he will have to wait two additional races to his 300th start.
Race
The start of the Belgian Grand Prix took place under dry conditions. Webber, who was on pole position came away not good and dropped back to fifth place. Hamilton made a better start and took the lead ahead of Kubica and Button. During the first round, it had started in the last curves to rain lightly. The track was wet, therefore, in the Bus Stop chicane and several drivers missed the braking point. This Barrichello Alonso drove into the back and turned the Ferrari drivers. After the leading pilots had completed their pit stop, there was no change to the order and Hamilton increased his lead more likely to continue. Vettel had already caught up on its backlog Liuzzi after a few rounds again and it came to a duel between the two again. This time though Vettel went on Liuzzi past, but the Italians touched a rear Vettel and the tire suffered a loss. Since the incident occurred in the last corner and he therefore had to drive a complete lap with a damaged tire back to the pits, Vettel lost a lot of time.
Ten laps to go it started to rain again. This time the rain was so strong that all pilots had to change to intermediates or rain tires. The top four pilots remained longest outside and Hamilton almost lost with this strategy, everything, as he slid into the gravel. But he could leave again, and retained his lead, thanks to the larger projection on Kubica. This time it came in the box shifts because Red Bull with a quick pit stop, Webber enabled overtake Kubica. The strategy of Mercedes drivers who joined their mandatory pit stop with the change to rain tires, went on and both drivers were also after the pit stop in the upper middle.

While Rosberg had improved by eight places in the race, Schumacher made even 14 positions. The other points went to Kamui Kobayashi, Petrov and Liuzzi, who benefited from a subsequently imposed 20 -second penalty against Jaime Alguersuari, who had missed a chicane.
In the drivers' world championship, the lead changed back to Hamilton. Webber took second place overall. In the Constructors McLaren-Mercedes took while on Red Bull -Renault, but the designer kept the first position.
