Background

After the Grand Prix of Korea Fernando Alonso led the drivers' championship with eleven points ahead of Mark Webber and 21 points ahead of Lewis Hamilton. Red Bull -Renault resulted in the constructors' championship with 27 points ahead of McLaren -Mercedes and with 52 points ahead of Ferrari.

HRT -Cosworth replaced, as did during the Singapore Grand Prix, Sakon Yamamoto by Christian Klien.

Training

In the first practice session on Friday Sebastian Vettel posted the fastest lap in front of his team-mate Webber and Hamilton.
