Background
After the Belgian Grand Prix Sebastian Vettel led the drivers' championship with 92 points ahead of Mark Webber and with 102 points, ahead of Fernando Alonso. Red Bull -Renault resulted in the constructors' championship with 131 points ahead of McLaren -Mercedes with 195 points ahead of Ferrari.
At the Grand Prix of Italy presented Pirelli riders the tire compounds medium ( white) and soft (yellow), as well as for wet conditions Intermediates (light blue ) and Full - Wets (orange ) are available.
With Michael Schumacher ( five times ), Rubens Barrichello, Alonso ( twice each ) and Vettel (once ) occurred four former winners of this Grand Prix.
Training
In the first free practice session, Lewis Hamilton posted the fastest time ahead of his McLaren team-mate Jenson Button and Vettel. In this training Nico Hülkenberg the Force India of Paul di Resta and Karun Chandhok took over the Lotus of Jarno Trulli. In the second free practice Vettel set the fastest lap before Hamilton and Schumacher. In the third free practice Vettel was again the fastest rider. On the second and third place followed by Webber and Felipe Massa.
Qualifying
In the first phase of qualifying Hamilton set the fastest lap. The HRT, Virgin and Lotus pilots and Jaime Alguersuari dropped out. In the second segment, Vettel was the fastest pilot. The Sauber, Williams and Force India pilots and Sebastien Buemi dropped out. In the final section finally won by Vettel and achieved the pole position ahead of Hamilton and Button.
Race
At the start of the Grand Prix of Italy of from fourth -starting Alonso took the lead ahead of Vettel and Hamilton. Also well launched Schumacher, starting from position eight took the fourth position. In midfield, there was a collision at the start. The last place launching Vitantonio Liuzzi lost control of his vehicle, and turned into the field. It collided with Vitaly Petrov and Nico Rosberg. Jérôme D' Ambrosio gave up after the first round, as he had a gearbox problem.
At the restart, the first two positions remained unchanged. Schumacher was able, however, to overtake Hamilton on the start -finish straight and take the third place. Between Schumacher and Hamilton an exciting duel for the fourth position again developed. After Schumacher was informed by his team that he is not allowed to change lanes several times in a duel, he finally succeeded Hamilton in the 27th round to drive past Schumacher. Hamilton had long stretches no chance against Schumacher because the car with his vote on the line was too slow and he was not faster with the help of the DRS. At this stage of the race, both Sauber drivers fell out with a gearbox failure. Sergio Pérez was before his failure in seventh place and had not yet completed his only scheduled pit stop.
After the second pit stops succeeded Button, who was moved up to Alonso before the pit stop to overtake his opponent and take the second position. Even Hamilton succeeded yet reach down to Alonso, for overtaking but not enough time.
Vettel eventually won his eighth race of the season ahead of Button and Alonso. Hamilton was ahead of Schumacher and Massa sixth. Alguersuari, who had gone from 18th on the grid, scored his seventh until then best finish in Formula 1 The other points were awarded to Paul di Resta, Senna and Buemi. Bruno Senna overtook first Formula 1 points. Pastor Maldonado, who was at the initial stage in sixth place, remained without points in eleventh place.
In the drivers' world championship Vettel extended his lead again. Webber fell behind Alonso and Button back to fourth place. In the Constructors' World Championship the first positions remained unchanged.
