2011 Tirreno–Adriatico

The 46th - wheel race Tirreno - Adriatico took place until 15 March 2011 9th. She was part of the UCI World Tour 2011 and within this the third race after the Tour Down Under and the voyage Paris - Nice, which overlapped with Tirreno- Adriatico. The total race distance was 1075 km.

The participants

Eligible were the 18 ProTeam. In addition, the organizer RCS awarded two wildcards to the Italian Professional Continental team Acqua & Sapone and Farnese Vini- Neri sottoli. Reported had, among other road world champion Thor Hushovd of Garmin - Cervélo, the Belgian classics specialist Tom Boonen of Quick Step, world time trial champion Fabian Cancellara from Switzerland of Leopard Trek and also the Italian last year's winner Stefano Garzelli of Acqua & Sapone. Other prominent starters were the sprinter Daniele Bennati, Óscar Freire and Allan Davis, the time trialist Gustav Larsson, Andy Schleck, who finished second in the Tour de France 2010, Cadel Evans and Michele Scarponi, who at the same time Garzelli second in the voyage was in 2010, and Edvald Boasson Hagen, Danilo Di Luca and Philippe Gilbert, who wanted to use the race in preparation for the spring classics.

The stages

The course was presented to the public on February 9, 2011.

For the first time, a 16.8 km long TTT found in the " Race between the seas " instead, which opened the race. The next two stages were extended in largely flat terrain. On the fourth and fifth stage, which were also the longest of the race with 240 miles, hilly sections were also happens on the fifth section, among others, the Sasso Tetto. A summary score was finally decided on the last day with a time trial in San Benedetto del Tronto. But the penultimate part of the day was waiting with a slope towards the target.

Full Time

After the somewhat surprising victory of the team at Rabobank team time trial of the American Tyler Farrar played from his sprint strength and conquered with a stage win and a second place in the Blue jersey. Foreman was doing him world champion Thor Hushovd. When it came to the Abruzzi, Gesink conquered the leader's jersey, but because of a small weakness during the fifth stage Evans took over the overall lead and consolidated this with his victory. Strong at the rises showed last year's runner Michele Scarponi and Damiano Cunego of Lampre- ISD. Because of their time driving weakness but it was not enough to overcome the strong Evans. No role playing, however, last year's winner Stefano Garzelli, who in the rising ground in the time trial was not yet up front with it. Surprisingly, also came that Ivan Basso still lost time and places in the short completion time trial. In the time trial, however, not only winner Fabian Cancellara showed his class, but also Robert Gesink, who had already decided the 2011 time trial of the Tour of Oman for themselves.
