Macerata

Macerata is the provincial capital of the eponymous province in the Marche (Italian Marche ) in Italy. It has 42 036 inhabitants ( 31 December 2012). Macerata situated on a hill between the rivers Potenza and Chienti.

History

Macerata is a medieval city, from the merger of two places - Castrum Maceratae ( civic center ) and Podium Sancti Juliani ( ecclesiastical center ) - was born. 1138 united the two parts and settlement were to free commune.

Attractions

The beautifully situated on a ridge town with wonderful views of the surrounding area offers many attractions such as palaces, a university (founded 1540) and an open air opera stage, the Sferisterio from the 19th century, which seats up to 4500 seats.

The main square Piazza della Libertà was built in 1581. Here are the box, the Clock Tower, City Hall, the Church of San Paolo, the theater, the university and the prefecture. The box in the Renaissance style, with marble columns with elegant capitals. The clock tower is 65 m high above a square base of about 9 × 9 m. It was built in 1492-1653 and was the highest in the brands. At the traditional university, you can study law, philosophy, education, foreign languages, politics and economics.

Right from the city tower runs a steep medieval staircase that Piaggia della Torre, also called Scalette. At its end, leads to the Piazza Mazzini, where once the city market was held. Today every Wednesday is market day.

Is the Sferisterio in Piazza Mazzini. It was built in 1819-1829 primarily as a sports venue for the Pallone game. Before there was football, this game was 1600-1900 the most popular sport in Italy. The end of July / beginning of August, it hosts the famous opera festival in Europe Sferisterio. Individual opera productions, for this arena is too large, are now also shown in the Teatro Laro Rossi. This has been completely refurbished in 1989 and has 550 seats.

Not far from the Sferisterio is the built in 1459 to 1464 with the cathedral from 1467 to 1478 built Campanile. Patron saint of Macerata is the holy Julianus. His arm is kept as a relic in the cathedral and committed His feast day on 31 August with a big city festival.

Next to the cathedral stands the small Basilica Santa Maria della Misericordia. According to tradition, a small chapel in a single day ( August 4, 1447 ) to have been built in order to implore the help of the Holy Madonna against the plague. 1735/1741, the small church was by the famous architect Luigi Vanvitelli to its present size and shape and expanded.
