The 9th stage of the Tour de France 2011 on July 10, led about 208 km from Issoire to Saint -Flour. On the stage in the Massif Central there was a sprint and eight mountain stages: three of the 2nd and 3rd category and two of the fourth category. There were still 187 of the 198 registered riders at the start.

Race course

Lieuwe Westra and Pavel Brutt translated the first attack, the others followed. However, they were caught again. Only a kilometer before the first mountain stage managed a successful breakaway, which was launched by Thomas Voeckler. Voeckler reached the summit as first, before Johnny Hoogerland, while the field was torn apart. Luis Leon Sanchez, Sandy Casar and Niki Terpstra joined later on to the top three, then their lead grew to at times over four minutes.

In the next four climbs each Hoogerland won ahead of Voeckler. Omega Pharma-Lotto and Leopard Trek led the field again a little closer.

After the sixth mountain classification Flecha and Hoogerland were hit by a support vehicle, with Hoogerland was swept off the road and landed on a barbed wire fence while admitting to deep cuts. However, both were able to continue the race and was later elected to the kämpferischten drivers.
