Background
After the Belgian Grand Prix Fernando Alonso led the drivers' championship with 24 points ahead of Sebastian Vettel and Mark Webber to 32 points. In the Constructors' Championship, Red Bull -Renault led with 54 points ahead of McLaren -Mercedes and 65 points on Lotus -Renault.
At the Italian Grand Prix put the Pirelli P Zero tire compounds drivers the hardware (silver) and P Zero medium ( white), as well as for wet conditions Cinturato Intermediates (green) and Cinturato Full Wets (blue ) are available.
When Lotus came before this race to a change of driver Romain Grosjean has been banned for causing a collision at the start when the previous Grand Prix for a race. Jérôme D' Ambrosio, regular replacement driver of the racing team, was awarded the cockpit for this Grand Prix.
In this race Michael Schumacher started the 300th time in a Formula 1 Grand Prix.
With Schumacher ( five times ), Alonso and Vettel ( twice each ) were three former winners of this Grand Prix.
As race stewards acted Silvia Bellot ( ESP), Gerd Ennser (GER ), Paolo Longini (ITA ) and Emanuele Pirro (ITA ).
Training
In the first free practice Schumacher set the fastest time, followed by Jenson Button and Nico Rosberg. Alonso and Pastor Maldonado remained with technical problems are. In this training Jules Bianchi to Force India of Paul di Resta, Valtteri Bottas Williams by Bruno Senna and Qing Hua Ma took over the HRT of Narain Karthikeyan. Ma became the first Chinese man who was driving a Formula 1 car in a Grand Prix weekend. In the second Friday practice Lewis Hamilton set the fastest time. According to him, followed by his team-mate Button and Alonso. Alonso suffered in this training a further technical defect. In the third free practice Hamilton was again the fastest lap. Only a thousandth of a second slower was Fernando Alonso, followed by Paul di Resta. Vettel retired with a technical defect.
Qualifying
In the first section Alonso was the fastest pilot. Nico Hulkenberg had a technical defect, and achieved no time. He thus failed the qualification. The race stewards made him subsequently to the race. The Caterham, HRT and Marussia pilots did not make it into the next segment. In the second section Alonso remained in the lead. The Toro Rosso and Williams drivers and D' Ambrosio, Sergio Pérez and Webber dropped out. In the third segment Hamilton set the fastest lap and scored the pole position ahead of Button and Felipe Massa.
Di Resta and Maldonado were mixed on the grid to five or ten positions to the rear. Di Resta was punished because of a gear change, Maldonado received two punitive transfers a five positions, as he had noticed at the Grand Prix of Belgium with an early start and causing a collision.
Schumacher succeeded in this qualifying for the 300th time qualifying for a Formula 1 Grand Prix.
Race
Massa started well in the Grand Prix and pulled over at Startup button. He also attempted an attack on the leader Hamilton, who, however, successfully defended his position. While Hamilton settled in the following rounds, developed in the background several duels. In the fourth round Vettel went past Schumacher on the fourth position. Schumacher was subsequently set by Alonso, who had already advanced to the sixth place, under pressure. After several failed attempts Alonso succeeded in the seventh round on the start -finish straight overtaking.
In the eighth round, Senna and di Resta dueled in the variant della Roggia. This Senna dodged through the outlet zone, so there was no collision. One lap later broke Vergne when braking before the Rettifilo the heck out and he lost control of the vehicle. He took off and landed short in the outlet zone. Vergne then complained of headaches and back pain.
While the event had stabilized at most positions, di Resta, Webber attacked before the Curva del Vialons, claiming in a subsequent counter the tenth position. Webber immediately sat down by di Resta from and retained even after a small mistake in the second Lesmo the position in front of his opponents. Of the riders in the front field, the Mercedes drivers began in the 14th round of the phase of the first pit stops. The other driver initially remained outside. It succeeded Pérez Kimi Räikkönen overtake. Raikkonen then drove into the box and made its stop in the 17th round. Two laps later, there was a similar situation between Massa and Button. First Button drove past his opponent, then Massa went into the pits. Again, two laps later, Vettel and Alonso went into the pits. Vettel stayed ahead of Alonso and both came back behind Massa on track.
In the 24th round of the leader Hamilton eventually went to the box. As his team-mate Button had recently changed his tires, Pérez took the lead for five laps. Between Vettel and Alonso a duel developed in the meantime. Alonso made pressure on Vettel. In lap 26 Alonso tried to drive past outside in the Curva Grande, but Vettel left him little space, so that Alonso drove through the gravel and lost some time. Alonso then had problems with the suspension, but came to the finish. Shortly after Hamilton was passed in the 29th round at the start -finish straight at Pérez on the leadership position, Alonso Vettel overtook before the variant della Roggia.
While Hamilton led the race ahead of Button, lay on the positions behind the Ferrari of Massa and Alonso. Vettel was however occupied by the race organizers for unfair driving with a drive-through penalty. Just before Vettel completed this, Button retired with technical problems at the gasoline pump. The fastest driver at that time was Pérez who pulled up with fast laps and overtaking the Ferrari. In the 40th round of the Ferrari driver switched places, so Alonso was second behind Hamilton.
After Pérez had completed more fast laps, he went to two Ferrari drivers over to the second position. First, he overtook Massa in the 43rd round to the back straight. In the 46th round he let Alonso before the Curva del Vialons behind. Pérez was indeed capable of faster laps to go as Hamilton to close in on him, but not succeeded.
Shortly before the end of the race fell Vettel, Webber and Hulkenberg with technical problems. Since she had completed enough laps, they counted. For Vettel it was another defect in the generator, which had already broken on a Saturday morning.
Hamilton eventually won with about four seconds before Pérez. Alonso, Massa and Raikkonen followed in the squares behind it. Schumacher and Rosberg on the sixth and seventh were the only drivers in the top -10, which were twice on the box. Rosberg also set the fastest lap. The remaining points went to di Resta, Kamui Kobayashi and Senna. Senna took the final points position only on the home straight, as Daniel Ricciardo, who held the position previously occupied, not accelerated with a technical problem of fuel supply from the last corner.
While Alonso kept the lead in the World Cup, there were several shifts behind him. Vettel and Webber lost the second and third place at Hamilton and Raikkonen. In the Constructors Ferrari took over the third position of Lotus, during the first two positions remained unchanged.
