Background

After the Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach Hélio Castroneves led in the drivers' standings with 6 points on Takuma Satō and 10 points on Scott Dixon.

When Itaipava São Paulo Indy 300 presented by Nestle drivers were a total of 170 seconds to use the push-to -pass button. The overtaking was allowed to be activated ten times in the race.

Training

The training for Indy in São Paulo began on Saturday and included only two instead of three sessions, as the race weekend only two instead of otherwise normal included three days. Qualifying

The first part of the session was held in two groups. The six fastest drivers in each group came to the second segment. The remaining starting positions were determined from the result of the first Qualifyingabschnitts, where the drivers of the first group, the odd positions from 13, and the drivers of the second group were assigned to the even positions from 14. In the first group EJ Viso set the fastest lap in the second group Simona de Silvestro was the fastest pilot. In the second group James Jakes rolled out of turn 7. Thus, there was a red flag. In the second segment of qualifying, the six fastest riders qualified for the final section. Canaan scored the fastest lap time. Next to him made ​​it Hinchcliffe, Viso, Dario Franchitti, Ryan Hunter -Reay and Dixon in the third part of qualifying, the so-called Firestone Fast Six.

Hunter -Reay finally posted the fastest time and achieved the pole position before Viso and Franchitti. It was Visos until then best qualifying result in the IndyCar Series.

Race

Hinchcliffe drove the gap to Satō and put his opponent in the final phase under pressure. Hinchcliffe moved past Satō and won the race. With a distance of 0.3463 s was the hitherto closest finish on a road course in the IndyCar history.

Satō was second ahead of Andretti, Oriol Servia and Newgarden. It was Newgardens first top- 10 ranking in the IndyCar Series. He had made more than 20 positions in the race. The top 10 was completed by Viso, Franchitti, de Silvestro, Pagenaud and Charlie Kimball.

In the overall standings Satō took the lead before Andretti and Castroneves.
