23 Skidoo (band)

23 Skidoo was a British band that was moving in the field of tension between Industrial, Experimental music, post-punk and alternative rock. She reached into her music a variety of role models on, including drum music from Burundi and Japan ( Taiko, Fela Kuti ), the early New York hip-hop and the fusion of industrial, post-punk and funk, as he is in the contemporary bands A Certain ratio, Throbbing Gristle, Cabaret Voltaire, The Pop Group and This Heat will.

History

23 Skidoo was founded in 1979 by Fritz Catlin, Johnny Turnbull and Sam Mills and later reinforced by Alex Turnbull and Tom Heslop.

Their first single "Ethics " was published in 1980, followed by the single " Last Words " (produced by Stephen Mallinder and Richard H. Kirk of Cabaret Voltaire). The debut album, "Seven Songs", was released in 1982. The EP " Tearing Up the Plans" appeared without the Turnbull brothers, who at the time visited Indonesia. Guitarist Sam Mills and vocalist Tom Heslop left the band shortly thereafter. With the accession of bassist Sketch the lineup remained until its dissolution in 2003, the same thing.

When the Turnbull brothers from Indonesia were back, they were influenced by gamelan and recruited Aswads horn player for their EP " coup", which also contained samples from Apocalypse Now by Francis Ford Coppola. "The Culling Is Coming " (1983) and "Urban Gamelan " (1984) followed next and were criticized at the time whether their approach to abstract tones.

Thereafter, published 23 Skidoo until 2000 no new material more. Just a compilation " Just Like Everybody", was released in 1987.

In the year 1989, when they shifted their attention towards hip-hop, the brothers Turnbull founded the label " Ronin " and published material from Deckwrecka, Roots Manuva, Rodney P and others. In 1991 the band signed to Virgin Records and were by the advance in the position to build a new studio. In 2000, she published " 23 Skidoo " which contained Posts by Pharoah Sanders and Roots Manuva. This was followed in 2002, a compilation of singles, " The Gospel Comes to New Guinea ", and for the first time on CD reissues of "Seven Songs" and "Urban Gamelan ".

The group was disbanded in 2003 by the Turnbull brothers.

Name reference

The band name refers to the then very commonly used phrase " 23 skidoo " from the USA of the 1920s, the " get out quickly " about or " get out while it's still doing well " means.
