26th Berlin International Film Festival

The International Film Festival Berlin film 1976 took place until July 6, 1976 by June 25th.

This was the last festival under the leadership of founding director Alfred Bauer, whose contract expired on 30 November 1976. Bauer then went into retirement.

On the 200th anniversary of the Independence of the United States of America was the history of the United States at the center of the festival. George Stevens Jr. showed his documentary America at the Movies, Robert Altman Buffalo Bill and the Indians. In addition, competition was the Watergate movie The Untouchables ( out of competition) by Alan J. Pakula and in the International Forum of New Cinema, the documentary The Unquiet Death of Julius and Ethel Rosenberg was shown. Another critical contribution to American history was the re-release of Charlie Chaplin's film A King in New York.

The biggest scandal took place during the forum. The Japanese film In the Realm of the Senses by Nagisa Oshima was confiscated during the Berlin premiere of the prosecutor and prohibited by a court hearing. In 1978 the ban was lifted and the film was released in Germany.
