38th Berlin International Film Festival
The International Film Festival Berlin 1988 took place until February 23, 1988 by February 12.
The German musical film line 1 by Reinhard Hauff opened the Berlinale. There were problems with the occupation of the Jury President. Gert Frobe had already given his commitment, but had to cancel due to illness in the short term. Moritz de Hadeln then summoned the Italian film critic Guglielmo Biraghi to the Jury President.
Competition
In the competition, the following films were shown:
International Jury
The international jury consisted of the following members: Guglielmo Biraghi (Italy ), Ellen Burstyn (USA), Heiner Carow ( DDR), Eberhard Junkersdorf ( Germany ), Tom Luddy (USA ), Heinz Rath bag ( Germany ), Daniel Schmid ( Switzerland ), Andrei Smirnov (USSR), Tilda Swinton (Great Britain ), Anna -Lena Wibom (Sweden) and Pavlos Zannas (Greece).

The jury selected the following winners of the competition program:
- Golden Bear: Red Sorghum by Zhang Yimou
- Silver Bears: The Commissioner ( Special Jury Prize )
- Norman Jewison ( best director )
- Holly Hunter (Best Actress - Broadcast News )
- Manfred Möck and Jörg Pose (Best Actor - Bear one another's burdens )
- Janusz Zaorski ( outstanding individual performance - Written and directed )
An Honorary Golden Bear for Lifetime Achievement awarded Alec Guinness.
