4- aminosalicylic acid ( para-aminosalicylic acid, PAS, trade name: PAS Fatol N ® (D) Manufacturer: Riemser ) is an antibiotic used to treat tuberculosis.
Representation
The presentation is by carboxylation of 3- aminophenol.
Properties
4- aminosalicylic acid crystallizes in the monoclinic crystal system, space group P21 / c with lattice parameters a = 728 pm, b = 382 pm, c = 2533 pm and β = 103 °. In the unit cell contains four formula units.
Use
PAS has a weaker effect than other antibiotics used to treat tuberculosis ( isoniazid, rifampicin, ethambutol, pyrazinamide or streptomycin ). As the sole means it is no longer in use, but plays a role in the drug combination for the treatment of multidrug-resistant tuberculosis. It is a prodrug in Mycobacterium tuberculosis, as it is as the actual substrate of p- aminobenzoic acid is incorporated on the dihydropteroate synthase in folate metabolism in bacteria as well, resulting in inhibition of dihydrofolate reductase.
Also for the treatment of inflammatory bowel disease (ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease) PAS was temporarily used.
