52nd Berlin International Film Festival
The 52nd International Film Festival Berlin took place between 16 February 2002 6 February.
It was the first Berlinale, which was led by the new director Dieter Kosslick. As a former director of the Film Foundation North Rhine -Westphalia, he pays special attention to the promotion of young German film and leads the section " Perspective German Cinema " as a new section. For the first time this year during the festival gala " Cinema for Peace " took place.
Section competition
In the official competition program, the following films presented this year to the judgment of the international jury:

International Jury
President of the Jury 2002 was the Indian director Mira Nair. Under her leadership, members of the jury selected the winners from: Lucrecia Martel (Argentina ), Claudie Ossard (France), Oskar Roehler ( Germany ), Kenneth Turan ( USA), Raoul Peck ( Haiti), Nicoletta Braschi (Italy ), Declan Quinn (USA ) and Renata Litvinova (Russia).
Award winners
- Golden Bear: This year, two Golden Bears were awarded: Bloody Sunday by Paul Greengrass, and Spirited Away by Hayao Miyazaki was awarded for the first time in the history of the Berlinale an animated film this prestigious award.
- Silver Bears in the following categories: Grand Jury Prize: Andreas Dresen for Grill Point
- Best Director: Otar Iosseliani for Monday morning
- Best Actress: Halle Berry for Monster's Ball
- Best Actor: Jacques Gamblin for Laissez -Passer
- Best Music: Antoine Duhamel for Laissez -Passer
- For an exceptional artistic achievement: the ensemble cast of eight women. Catherine Deneuve, Isabelle Huppert, Emmanuelle Béart, Fanny Ardant, Virginie Ledoyen, Danielle Darrieux, Firmine Richard and Ludivine Sagnier
Panorama section
The Panorama Audience Award this year received the documentary Blind Spot - Hitler's Secretary of André Heller. The " Teddy Award " was awarded the Australian film Walking on Water by Tony Ayres. The Prize of the Ecumenical Jury awarded the film L' Ange de tar by Denis Chouinard.
Honorary Golden Bear
This year, two artists were honored for her life's work: the Italian actress Claudia Cardinale and the American director Robert Altman.
Children's Film Festival
- Crystal Bear the Children's Jury for the Norwegian film Glasskår by Lars Berg.
Retrospective
This year's retrospective exhibited under the title European 60s - revolt, Fantasy & Utopia films by filmmakers from Eastern and Western Europe that have shaped and influenced the film events of the 1960s in Europe. Among others, the following films were shown:
