A Collection of Songs Written and Recorded 1995-1997 is the debut album by Bright Eyes. It was recorded in the period between 1995 and 1997 and published in January 1998 on Saddle Creek.

The album was recorded almost single-handedly by Conor Oberst and contains - in contrast to later releases of Bright Eyes - very few contributions from other musicians. It may therefore be more or less considered as a one-man project of Conor Oberst. (see also section Musician list )

Style

The album sounds like, for lack of professional recording technology, very lo-fi. Most of the songs are orchestrated quite sparse. The idiosyncratic vocals of Conor Oberst is thus often in the foreground.

Reception

To release the album received little attention, so that the few existing reviews consider the album only in retrospect, as Bright Eyes already had a certain reputation.

So Allmusic rated the album during a re-release in June 2000, 2.5 out of 5. On one hand, praises the reviewer the songwriting skills of young Conor Oberst ( "Even at a young age, it's clear did Colonel is an extremely talented songwriter "), but criticized in parts of the song ( "there are plenty of sour moments [ ... ] But They are almost always the result of the singer 's delivery " )
