Abu al-Hasan Ali ibn Othman

Abu l -Hasan Ali ibn Uthman (Arabic أبو الحسن علي بن عثمان, DMG Abū ʿ Alī b l - Ḥasan ʿ Uthman, . † 1351 ) was the eighth Sultan of Marinids in Morocco ( 1331-1351 ).

After the takeover of power by his father Abu Said Uthman II (1310-1331), Abu l -Hasan turned to the fight against Castile in Andalusia. So already in 1333 Tarifa was recaptured in alliance with Genoa and the Nazarite. However, the Marinids and Nasrid under Abu al -Hasan on the Rio Salado suffered on October 30, 1340 a devastating defeat against the combined armies of Castile and Portugal. Abu l -Hasan could only save themselves by flight. With Algeciras lost Marinids 1343 their last stronghold in Andalusia.

Successful Abu l -Hasan was against it in the Maghreb, where, after a marriage alliance with the Hafsids the realm of Abdalwadiden conquered ( 1334-1337 ). 1349 was even the subjugation of Hafsidenreiches and the entry into Tunis. However, it soon came to an uprising of the Bedouin tribes, who in 1350 defeated the heavily Berber troops of Abu l -Hasan at Kairouan. This led to the complete collapse of the Merinidenherrschaft in Ifriqiya, so that Abu l -Hasan was forced to flee to Morocco with a ship over the Mediterranean.

In the meantime, his son Abu Inan Faris had had proclaimed Sultan, on the assumption that Abu l -Hasan the defeat of Kairouan have not survived. It came to a fight in which Abu l -Hasan was defeated and had to retreat in the High Atlas. During the negotiations with his son, he died and was buried in Fes. Although Abu l -Hasan was a great commander, but lacked the talent to secure his conquests in the long term and to integrate them into the kingdom.

Although Abu l -Hasan had failed as a commander, the inner peace in Morocco has been maintained up to the revolt of a son. This led to an economic boom in the country and a cultural flowering, which was sponsored by Abu l -Hasan on. Thus, inter alia, a mosque in Tlemcen erected over the grave of the famous mystic Abu Madjan. In Fes, the madrasah was built Misbahiyya.

His mausoleum ( Qubba ) is obtained in the Chellah, Rabat Necropolis of the merinidischen partially.
