Emperaire took in Aix drawing lessons from 1844 to 1856, and then went on to further studies at the school of painting of Thomas Couture in Paris, while Cézanne finished his schooling in 1858. Until 1861 They met at the Académie Suisse in Paris. To reach the conclusion, Emperaire was any help right, he would have lived on the street. He even wrote in a letter: "If I can occasionally spend 80 centimes for a meal, I like an orgy appears. [ ... ] Yes, Paris is a large grave. [ ... ] Few cope, most perish. "

On the eve of his first exhibition in Paris, he added the canvas of a painting, add a non-tested varnish. The next day the painting was destroyed. He was so horrified that he never used varnish again, a statement that many of his paintings no longer exist. It is only the intervention of the son of Joseph Ravaisou, thanks to a French painter, that some paintings have survived.

By happy coincidence Emperaire was commissioned to paint a painting for the Louvre, and he got 1000 francs for it, which was a considerable sum for that time. This income allowed him to offset some debt and enabled him in October 1873 trip to Aix. This year, he met the writer Joachim Gasquet in Aix, which should be his best friend to the end of life.
