Adolf Jülicher

Adolf Jülich ( born January 26, 1857 in Falkenberg in Berlin, † August 2, 1938 in Marburg ) was a German Protestant theologian ( New Testament ) and church historian.

Life

Adolf Jülich was born on January 26, 1857 in Falkenberg. He grew up in a devout family: His father, Friedrich Jülich, was a teacher by profession in a boy's home and tended to his religious beliefs to pietism. From 1867 to 1875 Jülich suffered the Knabenkonvikt Paulinum in Berlin. Then he studied Protestant theology at the University of Berlin. His teachers were here under different August Dillmann, Otto Pfleiderer and Bernhard Weiss. His doctorate in 1880 in Halle ( Saale) with a thesis on the Old Testament ( The sources of Exodus I-VII, 7).

After studying Jülich preached since 1882 at the Frederick orphanage Rummelsburg. Parallel to this work, he wrote to a work on the parables of Jesus, now that is a New Testament study. In 1886 he was awarded the academic degree of Lic theol for work at the Theological Faculty of the University of Berlin. and thus the right to teach. In 1887 he was appointed Privatdozent in Berlin and completed his habilitation with a thesis on the history of the Church. 1888 Jülich was then appointed as an associate professor at the University of Marburg; In 1889 he was professor of New Testament and church history.

In the following years he published numerous, sometimes very influential work on the New Testament and church history. His Introduction to the New Testament has been used for decades in teaching; his parables of Jesus were repeatedly reprinted. He also wrote numerous reviews and articles on church history for Pauly Realencyclopädie of classical archeology (RE). Jülich was a prominent representative of the historical-critical method that has been able to help theology to new recognition in the scientific world. In 1923 he became Professor Emeritus, but he worked tirelessly despite his blindness in 1925 continued his studies of growth, primarily on an edition of the New Testament by the Old Latin tradition, whose first issue he could still experience. He died on August 2, 1938 in Marburg.
